TAUERN-CYCLE PATH

ca. 325 km
Krimml: ca. 1.100 m above sealevel
Passau: ca. 310 m above sealevel

Downhill through green alpine valleys!

No other cycle path starts as spectacular as the Tauern Cycle Path on the waterfalls of Krimml, the highest falls of Europe.
To top your experience we recommend to take a hiking tour to the spring of the river Salzach in the National Park Hohe Tauern. Stay the first night in the nice little town Krimml or Wald/Königsleiten.
In Kaprun the decision has to be made, if you wish to proceed along the river Salzach or on the river Saalach (Tauern Round Tour).

Along the river Salzach you find e.g. the famous Großglockner Street, the Fortress Werfen, the Giant Ice-Caves and the old Celtic town Hallein with the famous Celtic Museum.

Attention 2005: Due to maintenance works of Ofenauer Tunnel on the Tauern Highway, heavy traffic might occurr on Pass Luegg. If you wish to avoid this, please take the train from Bischofshofen to Golling (approx. 10 min.)

Salzburg offers a rich cultural heritage with the fortress and the historical old town.

If you decide to follow the Saalach Valley from Zell am See to Salzburg, you cycle partly in Germany (Bavaria). Near Bad Reichenhall at the town Marzoll you return to Austria. A quiet cycle path through river meadows and forests brings you to Hammerau where you cross the Saalach on a new cycle bridge to Grünau. From here you again follow the Saalach to their mouth into the Salzach near Salzburg. Here you can turn to the right and approach Salzburg from the most beautiful side with a spectacular view to the fortress.

After Salzburg the river Salzach forms the boarder to Bavaria. Little towns as Laufen or Tittmoning were old salt trading centres.

From Burghausen to Schärding we recommend to take the Bavarian bank of the cycle path. Here you cross a bird sanctuary of highest importance (Europe Reserve Lower Inn).

If you wish to stop in Passau or to proceed to Vienna is - as always - your own decision.
