The Lovely Tauber Valley
From Wertheim on Main to Rothenburg o.d. Tauber (Bavaria)
Through forests and across meadows, past sunny
vine-yards, along the rivers and through medieval towns and villages
- the Tauber Cycle Path is rightfully called "lovely".

The valley of the river Tauber is located south
of Würzburg. Therefore we recommend to start the tour in Würzburg,
then by bicycle on the Main Cycle Path via Gemünden and Lohr to Wertheim.
Thus the tour is about 100 km longer. Würzburg has excellent access
by train.
Once at the Tauber we follow the river against the flow and reach Tauber-Bischofsheim.
Many half-timbered houses and the red sandstone form a harmonic ensemble.
Castles, fortresses and monasteries pay testimony of a long past.
Via Lauda and Königshofen you reach Bad Mergentheim. Here you find
a historic old town with the castle of the German Order. If you are interested
in art, don't miss the cultural forum. Here local artists as well as of
Picasso, Dali, Miro and Hundertwasser are exposed.
Not to forget: an excellent wine grows here, too. The best known is a
strong wine called Bocksbeutel, grown in the area of Reicholzheim.

The final destination,
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, has a worldwide reputation of the biggest
maintained medieval town of Europe. In the centre historical buildings
as the town hall, the town museum, the church from the 14th century, an
old port, all surrounded by the old fortification walls.
Rothenburg o.d. Tauber certainly is the highlight of this bicycle holiday.
The charming and varied nature along the route add to the value of this
tour.
If you feel like extending your stay, you can change to the Altmuehl
Cycle Path and thus reach the Danube.
