From German Passau
via Austrian Vienna to Hungarian Budapest
- three cities, characterised by their great past, architecture and ecclesiastical
tradition.
The Danube no longer is the youthful fastflowing river, but streams along
through a deep valley, created throughout the centuries. The cycle path
follows old bridle paths. Some detours explore the surroundings as e.g.
the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Wachau.
If you decide to use your car as means of arriving we recommend the beautiful
baroque town Schärding in Upper Autria, which is especially hospitable
to cyclists. The car can be parked on a free public car park (information:
Tourism Organisation Schärding).
If you prefer starting in Passau, please take the train, as free parking
space is rare!
The Danube Cycle Path is a very popular recreational reserve, we recommend
to avoid strong weekends as e.g. Easter, Whitsunday or when summer holidays
start in Bavaria.

The stage between Vienna
and Budapest still leads on public streets,
partly with heavy traffic. To use quite side roads you will need a very
good local map. Unfortunately no printed guide is available in English
language.
To return to your car, railway connection is preferrable. Attention:
Budapest has several main railwaystations - please make sure, that you
take the right one. Usually a change is necessary in Vienna.
