The first part of the Danube
Bycicle Trail covers the distance between the spring in Donaueschingen
to Passau, where the Danube crosses and constitutes the border
between Austria and Germany.
At first only a small river, the Danube seeks her way through steep ridges,
formed from limestone. The so called "Blue
Pots" between Immendingen and Möhringen are a very special
sight of the Nature Park "Obere Donau". Then the Danube passes
the south of the "Schwabisch Alb", a lovely region of green
hills. Numerous castles, monasteries and fortresses
render beautiful sights along the trail. Major points of interest are
the old fortress Wildenstein, the Abbey Beuron and the mighty castle Sigmaringen.
Not to be missed is the famous old
town of Ulm with the highest steeple in Germany. Here you pass
the border to Bavaria. The Danube is streaming along in her bed, passing
by historical towns as Ingolstadt, Vohburg (1.200 years old) or Regensburg.
A special highlight is a small
passage through the high ridges between Weltenburg
and Kehlheim. The city of Kehlheim takes special care for the cycle-tourists.
Lockers for your bicycle, big enough also
for the pannier bags, allow free strolling through the historical centre.
A visit at the local brewerie "Schneider Weisse" with the beautiful
"Biergarten" is a special highlight.

From Regensburg to Passau
the Danube cycle trail passes through agricultural countryside. Wide fields
and small villages accompany the trail. Straubing,
Deggendorf, to name some of the historical interesting cities passed
by, offer variation.
In Passau, the "Venice of the North",
the rivers Ilz and Inn join their waters with the Danube.
Here the Danube II from Passau to Vienna starts.

With only a few exemptions
the Danube river trail is quite flat, paved or tarmac surface.
Discovering a beautiful part of Germany, it offers nature and culture
in riches.
