Idyllic landscape with sheep

The valley of the river Altmuehl is fascinating in a way, that transponds you into the old pre-industrial times. Historic small towns and villages, old castles and fortresses, embedded into a very special and quite unexpected heather vegetation.
With only 230 km the valley of Altmuehl might be too short a distance for your tour. A combination with the "Lovely Taubervalley" or the "Danube Riverpath" can be the right solution.

The best places to start with the Altmuehl Cycle-Path is either Rothenburg o.d. Tauber (coming from the Lovely Taubervalley cycle path) or Ansbach. You pass the small towns Leutershausen and Herrieden on your way to Gunzenhausen. Farther on to Treuchtlingen and the old bishop-town Eichstätt. Next stations are Beilngries and Riedenburg on the way to the Danube.

The landscape of the Altmuehl valley partly is preserved as a natural reserve. The river meanders undisturbed through green meadows. Due to the special geological situation, parts of the Altmuehl valley are covered with heather vegetation. Juniper, sparce gras and heather are an ideal pasture for countless sheep, guarded by sheep-dogs and their guardians.

The Natural Reserve Altmuehl stretches over 3.000 km² and offers a beautiful und calm recreational area not only for cylists.

The river of Altmuehl flows into the Danube near the town Kelheim. Here you can follow the Danube cycle path into the direction of Regensburg and further on to Passau.
Either combined with the Danube or the Lovely Tauber Valley or spending a holiday in the region, the Altmuehl is one of the rare rivers, which preserved the local character and tranquility of nature.
